NBAC Mid Summer
Classic: Michael Phelps Rockets Through 100 Fly, Allison Schmitt
Tops 200 Free -- July 10, 2010
BALTIMORE, Maryland, July 10. THE
first two nights of swimming at the NBAC Mid Summer Classic held in
Baltimore produced a pair of world-class times for the hometown
crowd. The meet is being held in long course meter
format.
Michael Phelps continued to round into form with just weeks until
U.S. Nationals with a quick time of 52.04 in the men's 100 fly.
That performance moved him to sixth in the world, up from his
previous season best of 52.41 from the Charlotte UltraSwim that
ranked him 11th in the world. Ellis Miller placed a distant second
in 56.93, while Giles Smith took third in 57.72.
Allison Schmitt, who is ranked 12th in the world with a 1:58.01
from June in the women's 200 free, neared that season best with a
triumphant time of 1:58.69 this evening. Elizabeth Pelton wound up
second in 2:01.23, while Felicia Lee took third in 2:01.42 as part
of a star-studded podium.
Scott Spann dominated the men's 100 breast with a winning time of
1:02.67. Todd Patrick finished second in 1:06.11, while Sean Roddy
earned third in 1:07.92. Rachael Schaffer took home the women's 100
breast in 1:11.71, while Karie Haglund earned second in 1:12.28.
Stephanie O'Toole placed third in 1:12.95. Schaeffer doubled up in
the women's 400 IM with a 4:53.44. Taylor O'Brien finished second
in 4:59.60, while Haglund snared third in 4:59.90.
Kevin Webster hit the wall first in the men's 200 free with a
1:54.31, while Smith took second in 1:56.34. William Yang tied
Patrick Murphy for third with matching 1:58.53s. Anne-Marie Botek
won the women's 100 fly in 1:02.77, while Willa Wang touched second
in 1:03.64. Cari Czarnecki snatched third in 1:04.07.
Bryan Offutt stopped the clock in 4:33.77 to win the men's 400 IM,
while Webster finished second in 4:34.42. Chase Kalisz pocketed
third-place honors with a 4:37.74.
During the first night of swimming Drew Cosgarea won the men's 800
free in 8:14.26. Brennan Morris (8:19.02) and Trevor Leland (8:38.14)
touched second and third. Gillian Ryan claimed the women's 800 free
title in 8:47.40, while Wang (8:50.90) and Brooke Golden (8:51.33)
snagged second and third.
